Vésperas – Traditional Holy Ghost Bread

Vésperas – Traditional Holy Ghost Bread

This bread was traditionally made the day before (vésperas) the big event: the Holy Ghost festivities. It is a sweet bread with a dense composition. Before baking, the bread is usually stamped with “chavões” (stamps) of Holy Ghost symbols. These breads were given to everyone who came to the Holy Ghost festivities. Some Holy Ghost organizers carry on this tradition to this day.

At Silva Bakery, we carry this bread in bags of 6 triangles. Traditionally, they were round with 5, or 6 stamps. We can make the traditional round breads in either 10oz or 14oz sizes with a 3 day in advance order.
